A visual guide to choosing the right edge for your countertop
The edge profile is one of the most overlooked decisions when choosing a countertop — but it has a big impact on the overall look and feel of your kitchen. Here is a guide to the most popular options, what they cost, and which style of kitchen they complement.
Standard Edges (Usually Included in Price)
Eased Edge
A simple, slightly rounded square edge. Clean, modern, and the most popular choice for contemporary kitchens. If you want your countertop to look sleek without drawing attention to the edge, eased is the way to go. Cost: Included.
Half Bullnose
A rounded top edge with a straight bottom. Softer than eased but still understated. Popular in transitional kitchens that blend modern and traditional elements. Cost: Usually included.
Upgraded Edges ($10-$30 per linear foot extra)
Full Bullnose
Completely rounded on the top and bottom. Creates a soft, classic look. Popular in traditional kitchens and bathrooms. Very comfortable on the arms when leaning against the counter. Cost: $10-$15/linear foot.
Beveled Edge
An angled cut along the top edge, creating a subtle decorative detail. Adds visual interest without being ornate. Works well in both modern and traditional settings. Cost: $10-$15/linear foot.
Ogee Edge
An elegant S-curve profile that is the hallmark of upscale, traditional kitchens. If you want your countertop to make a statement, ogee delivers. Pairs beautifully with marble and exotic granites. Cost: $15-$25/linear foot.
Dupont Edge
Similar to ogee but with a sharper, more angular curve. Distinctive and elegant. A step up from bullnose for homeowners who want something special without going full ornate. Cost: $15-$25/linear foot.
Waterfall Edge
The countertop material continues down the side of the island or cabinet to the floor. This is the most dramatic and modern option — a true design statement. Popular on kitchen islands. Cost: $25-$50/linear foot (requires additional material).
How to Choose
- Modern kitchen: Eased or beveled
- Traditional kitchen: Ogee or full bullnose
- Transitional: Half bullnose or dupont
- Statement island: Waterfall
- Budget-conscious: Eased (included in price)
- Bathroom vanity: Half bullnose or full bullnose (comfortable and safe)
